Fire is the certainly one of the most dangerous natural forces discovered by the mankind. It is indeed a friend when taken proper care and powerful source of disaster when neglected. In Vedas it assumes the position of the God. First recorded attempt in combating the ravages of uncontrolled flame of fire goees back to 2 BC.
Till 17th century, the only weapon to fight the fire was water and passed it through human bucket chains. With the invention of steam engines by 18th century fire fighting saw revolutionary changes in its methods. Hand operated pumps came into existence to fight the fire. With the time, fire fighting scenario took a dramatic change with the introduction of primitive breathing apparatus in the early 1900s ensured that for the first time, fire fighters could penetrate into smoke filled buildings to combat fire at a close distance.
Further major development enabled the use of high rise ladders, radio communications, more protective uniforms etc made fire fighting more systematic. Now a days fire engines are equipped with a sophisticated armory of modern firefighting technology.
